I've been using the Otterbox Commuter for 4 months. The buttons were stiff and I wanted to get away from the all black and get a little color, but aside from white and black the other Commuter colors were just too feminine for a guy. I had a hard time finding good comparisons for both cases, so now that I have both cases I'll review them here.

1) Buttons - UAG hands down. You can feel the buttons click and the design of the rocker switch and standby button is fantastic. The Commuter buttons look nice, but the material is such a soft rubber that you have to apply tons of pressure and you can't feel the click.

2) Installation - Again UAG is much easier. There's a youtube video showing how to get it off properly without flexing too much which will probably avoid cracks a couple of people mentioned. Material has a little flex so I don't think there will be issues. Getting the Commuter on and off is tougher, but with a little practice takes under a minute. But if you change out your battery often you'll probably want the UAG case. I use an external battery for charging so I only take it off about once a month to clean the phone.

3) Protection - I'm giving the edge to the Commuter here. The lip over the screen covers more of the screen than the UAG and is thicker/softer material. If I had to choose a case for a face down drop it's easily the Commuter. The softer material in the corners of the Commuter would probably be better in a corner drop, but marginally. But that same soft material causes the issue with the buttons. The UAG has more material in the corners but it's harder, which will impart more shock into the phone. The UAG will do a better job than an all TPU case like the Diztronic, but the Commuter is slightly better in my opinion.

4) Cutouts - Great on both phones. I like the USB and headphone covers on the Commuter but some people think they're a nuisance. That's personal preference.

5) Size - UAG is the same width and height as the Commuter. The UAG is about 1mm thinner. However because the corners are thicker than the rest of the case the UAG feels significantly thinner in the hand. The rounded corners of the Commuter are a little nicer for pocketing the phone, but honestly I don't notice much difference in the pocket.

6) Design and Colors - UAG wins here. I would like the company logo to be a bit more muted like the Otterbox. It's a little loud but not obnoxious. Men will definitely prefer the color selections from UAG while women might prefer Otterbox. I love the little rubber feet on the back of the UAG to keep the phone from sliding around on a hard surface like the Commuter will. Both feel about the same with regards to slipping in your hand since they're both hard plastic.

7) Screen protector - Don't buy either for the screen protector. Both of these companies make great cases and garbage protectors. They'd be better off not including it and selling a wet applied/quality protector separately or including it for a few bucks more. With the curved edges on the S3, the wet applied models are the only ones that will completely adhere.

I'd go 4.5 stars for the UAG and 4 for the Commuter. If Otterbox had some more manly color options and the buttons weren't so hard to push I probably never would have bought the UAG case. I'd like to see UAG go with a slightly softer TPU for added protection and a slightly larger lip over the phone, as long as it doesn't affect the buttons.

  1. UAG hit one out of the park with this case. First, don't let the pictures of this case concern you. It is not bulkly. It slides into my pocket easily. Best of all it looks great and will easily protect my S3. I have owned a lot of cases throughout the years. HANDS DOWN, this is the best of all of them. Stop looking...you have found the perfect case to protect your new investment. Sincerely, a new UAG fan.

  2. This is my first case from UAG and I'm impressed.

I've always been an otterbox customer, but wanted something with a bit more style to it. While Otterbox is a fine case as far as protection goes, it's a bit bland on aesthetics.

I went out on a limb and got this case because of good reviews and good styling.

UAG went beyond my expectations with some additional features.

The black portion of the case is what sits against the phone's outer edge and some of the back. It's not silicone per se, but a semi-pliable rubber (at least I think that's what it is.) It has some give to it, but it's still quite stiff.

The extra padding on the corners is a must. Too often have I seen cracked screens starting at the corners. The story always goes "I dropped it getting it out of my pocket/purse and it fell right on the corner...crack".

While the blue backing is simple Polycarbonate (plastic) with a matte finish, the black bumpers actually have very small (but useful) feet that protrude out. In other words, when you set the phone backside down on a flat surface, it doesn't sit on the case itself, it sits on the four feet. This will prevent scratches to the back and since the bumpers have good friction on smooth surfaces, the feet keep the phone from sliding around.

The case doesn't add a lot of bulk to the device and feels good in the hand. There are lots of places to get a good grip on the phone when getting it out of your pocket.

I've seen some reviews on the buttons not lining up right or being stiff to press, but that is not the case with mine. I'm not sure if I've gotten an updated version or if others don't have their cases aligned properly, but I have no issues with mine. Good click feel on volume and lock buttons.

The only real con is the ports. While they give you ample space for a charger and earphones and line up just fine, they don't have covers like with otterbox. While I've never had an issue with a clogged connector, for some, this might be a deal breaker.

Screen protector is a standard dry-install type and is pretty cheap. I didn't have plans to use this, so I threw it away.

  3. I'm really liking this case one week in and I'm glad I trusted the reviews and went with it. All the holes in the case are perfectly placed and all types of headphone/USB cables I possess, fit well.

I read in a few reviews that the power-button is very hard to press/activate on the Galaxy S3 case. Initially, I had the same experience, but on further investigation, I found that there is a simple fix. There is a slit along the bottom length of the power button on the case that was fused shut when the new case came in. Without the phone installed into the case, I simply had to push the power button a few times and the slit opened up. This makes a huge difference in the sensitivity of the button. Now I can even feel the phone's actual power button being pressed.

  4. I have had numerous cases for phones, and I decided to give the UAG a try. I am extremely impressed. I work a physical job where my phone gets beaten and thrown around, this case has been able to take everything I have thrown at it.

It is really great looking, and very different than anything else on the market. I cannot wait to see some of the new stuff on the way.

Buy this case!!!! well worth its money!!!!

Quick review video on the Samsung galaxy S3 Urban Armor Gear Case in White. There are other colors that I didn't mention, but I definitely explain the real importance of the case itself. Hopefully this video helps you out at least some bit.
